About Us

I am excited to welcome our students and families to the 2025–2026 school year at La Vina Middle School. This year, I am committed to Promise 180, which reminds me that each of our 180 school days is a chance to support meaningful learning and build strong connections. I will continue fostering a safe, supportive environment where every Eagle can grow academically and personally. I am grateful for the partnership of our parents and families, and I look forward to seeing our students embrace new challenges with confidence. I am filled with pride and optimism as we begin this new school year together.

Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) clubs from 10 different schools gathered at the historic Bell Tower Plaza.

Middle and high school students across Kern County are choosing advocacy over tobacco use by participating in the third annual Youth Against Commercial Tobacco Summit at Bell Tower Plaza, where SWAT clubs from 10 schools collaborated to create a podcast promoting prevention. Organized by groups including the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Blue Zones Project Bakersfield, and Kern County Public Health, the event empowers students to speak out against tobacco use and push for policy change. Student leader Brianna Naranjo highlighted podcasts as an effective way to reach teens through social media and amplify youth voices. The effort comes amid ongoing concerns, as recent data shows over 10% of high schoolers and nearly 6% of middle schoolers regularly use tobacco, with vaping being the most common form.

We have some great news to share! Our district is being featured in today’s edition of CalMatters - a nonprofit and nonpartisan news website with a wide readership across California. I am extremely proud of this article as it highlights the hard work and dedication of our entire district family.  At the center of this achievement are our district schools. Your tireless efforts ensure that our students' love of learning will never fade even during a pandemic. For me, this article represents the heart that each team member has for our precious students.

Four individuals, three women and one man, are standing on a stage in front of a wooden backdrop. The women are wearing formal attire, including a pink jacket, a black outfit, and a gray coat, while the man is wearing a dark suit. They appear to be at some kind of formal event or ceremony.

Great news! Our District has been selected as a recipient of a Golden Bell Award presented at the annual CSBA (California School Boards Association) conference. This award is a reflection of every DUSD team member’s efforts to support student attendance through our Promise 180 initiative. I would also like to recognize and thank the site team members who oversee attendance each day—your dedication to monitoring and supporting daily attendance is truly appreciated.

In addition, our district had the opportunity to present at the State Board of Education meeting, highlighting our collaborative efforts to improve services, academic achievement, suspension rates, and our work with the Community Schools Grant. The State Board was genuinely impressed with our presentation. A special thank you to April Gregerson, who presented on behalf of the district with such enthusiasm, clarity, and pride.

We also want to share the video that was featured for the State Department of Education, showcasing our Promise 180 efforts. Please click the following link to view. Promise 180 Video

Congratulations to our entire district team for your commitment to supporting students and believing that every student’s dreams can become a reality through a strong educational foundation and a staff who truly believes that each child matters.
